A 74-year-old woman from India raised eyebrows after giving birth to twins, making her likely to be the world’s oldest first-time mom.
It also ended a 57-year drought to start a family.
Erramatti Mangayamma, of Hyderabad in central India, underwent Cesarean section to give birth to her girls who were reported conceived through IVF.
Mangayamma said she became menopausal 30 years ago. She has beaten the record of Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara of Spain who also delivered twins at age 66 on December 2006.

Mangayamma and her husband, agriculturalist Yerramatti Raja Rao, 80, got married on March 22, 1962. However, they remained childless until recently despite all their efforts.
Mangayamma said after a neighbor conceived at the age of 55, she was inspired to try conceiving again. Her treatment was sponsored by her IVF clinic in Guntur because it would be historic if the procedure succeeded which it obviously did.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) involves fertilizing a woman’s egg outside the body before it’s implanted in the biological mother’s uterus or a surrogate to start the pregnancy. The sperm used in Mangayamma’s pregnancy was reportedly her husband’s.
Remarkably, she conceived after only one cycle of IVF treatment.
Because of her age, Mangayamma stayed in the hospital for the whole of her pregnancy so that she could be closely monitored.
Following the birth, she said, “I cannot express my feeling in words.
“These babies complete me.
“My six-decade-long wait has finally come to an end.
“Now, no one calls me infertile anymore.
“I thought about taking help of IVF procedure after a neighbor conceived at the age of 55.”
Hospital director Dr. Sanakayyala Umashankar supervised Mangayamma’s case.
“The surgery went smoothly,” Dr. Umashankar said.
“Both the mother and the infants are healthy and have no complications whatsoever.
“However, the mother has been taken to the intensive care unit to come out of the stress she had undergone for the last few hours.”
Dr. Umashankar added that because Mangayamma didn’t have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, there were few problems conceiving or delivering.
“I don’t think she will have any major health issues in the post-delivery period,” he said.
“However, she cannot breast-feed the babies. But no worries.
“We can feed the babies with milk obtained from the milk bank.”
