2019’s Miss Universe Gave A Powerful Message About Place Of Woman In The World


From Miss USA to Miss Universe, many beauty pageants grace our television every year.

The Miss Universe competition this year took place at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States on December 8, 2019, and saw 3 candidates from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South Africa land in the final.

After being revealed as the 2nd Runner-Up to Sofía Aragón, the Mexican beauty, everyone held their breaths to hear who was this year’s Miss Universe title winner, Madison Anderson or Zozibini Tunzi.

Finally, Steve Harvey revealed that the title was stolen by Miss South Africa.

The crowning moment may be most pleasing to watch, after congratulating her on the victory, most people looked back and reflected on what message Zozibini Tunzi had channeled throughout the competition.

Others, like Naomi Campbell, model, and businesswoman, admired Zozi for sharing her belief in standards of beauty and how her appearance and titles changed what was once considered a norm.

Tunzi is South Africa’s first black woman to be crowned Miss Universe title Leila Lopes was given the title Miss Universe in 2011 and Africa’s third woman to win.

She started her pageantry profession in 2017 after facing a lot of hardships.

After the end of the competition, many people quoted what Tunzi said on stage, especially her approach to beauty standards:

“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never seen as beautiful. I think today’s time for that to end. I want kids to look at me and see my eyes, and I want them to see their heads in my head”.

Tunzi is the first woman to win the title of Miss Universe with afro-textured hair.

Tunzi holds a Bachelor of Public Relations and Image Management degree from the University of Technology of Cape Peninsula, which she received in 2018.

She had her first go to Miss South Africa a year before that, where she was chosen as one of the top 26 semifinalists, but she was not chosen as one of the twelve finalists.

Determined, Zozibini returned to the top in 2019, winning the title of Miss South Africa, which earned her the chance to represent her country at the Miss Universe contest.

“I was very passionate about my quest to crack the stereotyping of beauty,” Zozi wrote on one of her social media posts, stressing the importance of her message.

“I believe in diversity and equality in every shape and type,” said the young woman.

She had the perfect opportunity to reassert her cause as one of Miss Universe 2019’s contestants.
