Firefighters Warn Leaving Water Bottles In Cars Could Start A Fire

Around 90 per cent of all natural disasters are related to water in one way or another, according to the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters.

However, floods, storms, and tsunamis aren’t the only threats that can be caused by water. Sometimes, even a seemingly harmless bottle of water can do the job.

Firefighters are warning vehicle owners not to leave any water bottle in their cars because it can start a fire or cause other damages which can be severe at times.

You would’ve probably known how a sheet of paper can be set on fire using a magnifying glass under sunlight.

This is exactly what happens when you leave your water bottles in your vehicles.

The sunbeams experience almost the same effect as that of a magnifying glass when they pass through plastic and water of your bottles.

It was confirmed by the Midwest City Fire Department through a properly conducted experiment. When the sunlight was made to pass through a water bottle, it reached the temperature of a whopping 250º.

Though you might guess the precautionary measures, here’s what you should do to avoid the issue.

First, don’t take water bottles into your vehicle because there is a good chance you will forget to take them out when leaving your car.

Second, if you can’t go out without a water bottle, like on a hot day, try to set a reminder for taking it with you whenever you leave your car.

Finally, if you don’t want to move around with your water bottle, try to keep it in a place where it can rest without being subjected to the sunlight.

For instance, you can leave it in the trunk of your car, or any other suitable place. Though these precautionary measures will take a little time, they might save you a lot of trouble in the longer run.
