The Tallest Outdoor Observation Deck In The Western Hemisphere Is About To Open In New York

New York Edge / Hudson Yards

New York City will literally have “the edge” as far as magnificent outdoor observation decks go when the Hudson Yards observation deck opens next year.

Appropriately named Edge, at 1,100 feet high it is set to be the tallest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere and the fifth highest in the world (the plum for the highest in the world belongs to the Shanghai Tower in Shanghai, China at 1,844 feet).

Visitors who will want a view of the famous Big Apple skyline will need a 60-second ride in the elevator. Once they reach the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards tower, 7,500-square-feet of the viewing area will be available to them jutting out 65 feet from the building’s sides. A magnificent view of the city awaits them from that point.

But visitors will not only be limited to viewing. A signature 10,000-square-foot restaurant will feed tourists should they tire of the sights and a bar and events space is also available for parties and get-togethers.

Although a launch date hasn’t been announced so far, group bookings have already been made available for the first quarter of 2020.

Jason Horkin, executive director of Hudson Yards Experiences, said, “Edge invites visitors to walk out into the sky and embrace unobstructed, panoramic views of New York City like never before.”

“The name reflects both the unique structural design, which pierces the sky when observed from below, and the exhilarating feeling of being on the brink of something exceptional — exactly where you are on edge,” he added.

Once it opens to the public, Edge will top the observation deck at the Empire State Building, measured at 1,050 feet above street level. It will also be higher than the Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Center, situated 850 feet above sea level.

Costing $28 billion and spread out over 28 acres on a working rail yard on Manhattan’s west side, Hudson Yards represents the largest ever privately built real estate project in the US.

More than 100 shops and restaurants will be located in the complex. It will also include a cultural and performing arts venue named The Shed as well as a public square and gardens.
