Police searched the hospital room of stage 4 pancreatic cancer patient for marijuana after someone reported the smell of weed coming from his hospital room in Missouri.
Nolan Sousley, who has cancer, recorded their search on a Facebook Live video that went viral.
The Bolivar Police Department received a call that the smell of weed was coming from the patient’s room at Citizens Memorial Hospital, so they followed up on the report even though Sousley told them he had taken THC oil capsules before entering the hospital.
“I had some capsules that had some THC oil in them,” Sousley told the police in the video. “I took them outside on the parking lot.”
An officer went through one of his bags while another stood at the back of the room. The officer at the back said: “If we find marijuana, we’ll give you a citation. We’re not taking you down to the county jail.”
At one point, a woman in a white lab coat entered the room. The officers explained the situation, adding the patient had another bag he wouldn’t let them check.
“I’m not letting them dig through it. It has my final-day things in there, and nobody’s going to dig in it,” Sousley said.
Eventually, he let the officers go through his bag but they didn’t find any marijuana, according to The Washington Post.
The hospital later apologized for what happened.
“We pride ourselves in providing compassionate care to all patients and we fell short of expectations,” Tamera Heitz-Peek, a hospital spokesperson told The Post.
“We apologize to our patient and his family and friends who were affected by our actions. We are reviewing the incident and will retrain our employees in the core values and the importance of respect and dignity to our patients and the community,” she said.
