Johnny Depp was left in tears after he received a seven-minute standing ovation at the premiere of his new movie Jeanne du Barry at the Cannes Film Festival.

The 59-year-old star, who plays King Louis XV in the movie, appeared to tear up as he took in the heartwarming moment.

The movie is the actor’s first project since he was shunned by Hollywood after his ex-wife Amber Heard made serious allegations against him in 2016.

The 76th Film Festival also marked the Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s first red carpet appearance since he won the defamation trial against Heard.

After the six-week trial last year, it was determined that the Aquaman actress had defamed Depp and she was ordered to pay him more than $8 million in damages.

Depp was welcomed by a sea of fans when he arrived, with many shouting ‘Johnny!’

The actor could not hide his excitement after previously being dropped from many projects during the trial.

Jeanne du Barry is set in 18th-century France under the reign of King Louis XV. It follows the love story between the King, played by Depp, and a working-class woman Jeanne Vaubernier, played by Maiwenn.

Speaking abou Depp’s appearance in Cannes, Thierry Fremaux – the festival’s boss – told the press: “I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the US. To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule: It’s the freedom of thinking, and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework.

“If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a film, or the film was banned, we wouldn’t be here talking about it.”

Fans who saw the video of Depp being moved to tears were quick to support the actor, with one writing: “Ovation for it taking 7 year for Johnny to get justice and get [his] career back. Proud of him.”

Another wrote: “He deserved this after all he went through! This man is a legend, a wonderful, genius, and eclectic actor as well as a humble and elegant man.”
