The research, which was funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation, found that the presence of a misfolded protein called alpha-synuclein can help determine whether someone has the life-changing disease.

While the misfolded protein can currently only be detected via a spinal tap, there are hopes that additional developments in the field will allow us to detect the protein and the illness through blood tests and nose swabs in the near future.
