The multinational toy company partnered with the US-based National Down Syndrome Society to design and develop a doll with a shorter and larger frame to represent females with Down’s Syndrome.

The doll also has a rounder face, almond-shaped eyes, and a flat nasal bridge – facial features typically associated with people who have Down’s syndrome.

Completing the look, Mattel further equipped the new Barbie with AFOs (ankle foot orthotics) which are used by some children with Down’s Syndrome to improve their walking patterns.

The doll, which has already hit the shelves in some Smyths stores around Europe, is part of the brand’s inclusive Fashionistas collection.

The news of the doll’s release was well-accepted by 21-year-old Ellie Goldstein, a British model with Down’s Syndrome who has worked with the likes of Gucci, Adidas, and Vogue, who admitted feeling “overwhelmed” with joy by the company’s inclusive toy.

“I am so happy that there is a Barbie with Down’s syndrome. Seeing the doll, I felt so overwhelmed – it meant a lot to me and I’m so honored and proud that Barbie chose me to show the doll to the world,” she said.

“Diversity is important to me as people need to see more people like me out there in the world and not be hidden away.”

Meanwhile, the National Down Syndrome Society president and CEO said it was an honor to work with Mattel on developing the new Barbie.

“This means so much for our community, who for the first time, can play with a Barbie doll that looks like them,” Kandi Pickard said.

“This Barbie serves as a reminder that we should never underestimate the power of representation. It is a huge step forward for inclusion and a moment that we are celebrating.”
