A Kenyan farmer has been using his spare time to deliver thousands of liters of water to quench the thirst of drought-stricken animals. And thanks to him, the animals are doing just fine.
The Tsavo West National Park has been affected by frequent droughts for the past few years, as a result of which, the groundwater has almost dried up in the area.
However, pea farmer Patrick Killonzo Mwalua has made it his mission to keep the animals in the region alive by making sure they’ve enough water to drink.
Patrick does this using a water truck.
Initially, he delivered 3,000 gallons of water 4 times a week. But he and his Canadian friend, Nina Poletti, are now bringing in even more water to save the animals from dehydration.
Sometimes, the duo even has to make daily trips, covering a distance of around 70 km.
Patrick enhanced the sphere of his activity after his story made headlines back in 2017. He then went on to start his own foundation so as to help as many animals as possible.
“There is completely no water, so the animals are depending on humans,” Patrick told the Dodo in 2017. “If we don’t help them, they will die.”

He got the idea of bringing water for the first time during one of his visits to the park in scorching summer. He was deeply moved when he saw the empty water holes and the dried land.
“We aren’t really receiving rain the way we used to,” he explained.
“From last year, from June, there was no rain completely. So, I started giving animals water because I thought, ‘If I don’t do that, they will die.'”
In addition to bringing water, the kindhearted man also pays regular visits to local schools so as to raise awareness about water conservation and how all of them can help save the country’s wildlife.
“I was born around here and grew up with wildlife and got a lot of passion about wildlife,” he said. “I decided to bring awareness to this so when they grow up they can protect their wildlife.”
Patrick says the animals have now become familiar with him and they even wait for him at times.
The farmer has been rightly hailed a hero on social media for his selfless devotion and efforts to conserve the wildlife in the region.
