Grandma Drifts Off Out To Sea While Posing On A Throne-Shaped Iceberg

A Texas grandmother got to be the queen of the oceans for a short time when an “iceberg throne” she sat on to pose for a picture drifted off to open water while on vacation in Iceland.

A 77-year-old grandma had to be rescued in Iceland when she climbed onto a throne-like iceberg that was suddenly carried away by a wave.

Judith Streng, from Texas, was on holiday with her son when she saw the ice chunk shaped like a throne on Diamond Beach, Jokulsarlon, Iceland.

Attracted to the idea of being a royal even for just a split second, the grandma climbed onto it and was snapped striking some poses.

But her icy throne was then swept away from the shore by a big wave, causing the elderly woman to drift out at sea.

“When I got on it, it started to totter and a wave was coming in,” Ms. Streng told ABC News.

“A very large wave came in and kind of made the throne kind of rock, and I could tell that I was slipping off.”

The nana’s ordeal came to light when her granddaughter Christine on Monday posted the pictures on Twitter after receiving them from her dad.

A sequence of snaps from the incident on February 26 showed how the woman drifted further and further away from the camera.

“Lost her kingdom when she drifted out to see! [sic]” Christine’s father texted her.

He added: “No joke. A coast guard rescuer had to save her and bring her back to shore!”

The pictures had got 66,000 re-tweets by Friday.

Ms. Streng was eventually saved by rescuer randy Lacount, a boat captain from Florida who witnessed her collapse, the grandmother told ABC News.

“I thought it was safe,” Ms. Streng told ABC. “One girl had been on it and then two girls at the same time, and it was very secure with them.

“But I don’t weigh very much. So it was a little easier to float off with me, I guess.”

Explaining why she chose to set out on the adventure in the first place, she told the network: “You know, I always wanted to be a queen. I mean, come on, that was my chance.”

The nana has now returned to the states and is recovering from her ordeal, her granddaughter told The Washington Post.

She relayed to Christine how she appreciates what a success her story has been, adding: “Being so popular is wild.”
