There are people who always ask, “What’s in it for me?” before doing something for other people while there are those who help others simply because it’s the right thing to do and don’t expect anything in return.
Stacy and Josh Lemonds, of Oklahoma City, was part of the latter category and were active in their church marriage group. Unfortunately, one day they came home in the middle of winter to find the heat out and the power gone.
The problem was that the house they were living in was built in 1945 and the wiring must have given out. The problem was, both of them happened to be unemployed at that time and couldn’t scrounge enough money to have their wiring repaired. And this wasn’t just some minor inconvenience because it was the dead of winter and without heat, it could quickly become dangerous for them inside the house.
The couple then decided to pray and even asked their church marriage group for prayers as well. But they received an unexpected answer that was a blessing from God.
A man named Joshua Matthews quickly reached out to them and offered to help. The couple did Joshua a kind turn a few weeks earlier when they learned that his wife was sick and brought warm meals to help speed her recovery.
Joshua never forgot that and as it turned out, he was an apprentice electrician at Dane Electric. Joshua, along with others in the company, offered to help out the Lemonds. Through the cold and wet days and nights, Joshua tirelessly worked to get the house’s wiring back up to speed.
The electric company pulled out the old meter because it was a fire hazard and everything that needed replacing was replaced.
And the best news of all? It was all done for free.
However, Stacy and Josh knew that they couldn’t leave it at that and needed to repay Joshua in some way.
Through the help of KFOR Oklahoma’s News 4 and First Fidelity Banks’ Pay It 4Ward program, the couple was given $400 to hand over Joshua.
And to get Joshua to visit the house again, they lured him back to the Lemonds’ place with a false inspection. The ruse was helped along by one of Joshua’s co-workers.
Once they presented Joshua with the $400, he insisted that they didn’t need to do that, but Stacy said they wanted to pay it all back somehow. The joy that both parties felt at having helped the other was a testament that kindness is often its own reward.
