Amazon is currently removing autism cure books from its online marketplace as they unscientifically claim children can be cured with pseudoscientific methods such as taking medication meant for treating arsenic and bathing in a toxic form of bleach.
The company confirmed that the books ‘Fight Autism and Win’ and ‘Healing the Symptoms Known as Autism’ are no longer available. They refused to answer certain questions as to why the books have been removed, citing a policy of not giving remarks on individual accounts.
The move by the tech giant followed after a report in Wired that criticized Amazon for offering books that are dangerous and dubious.
News organizations have pointed out Amazon’s practice of displaying books that promote health-related misinformation and vaccine for years, but the pressure has intensified recently.
Online platforms reacted to increased scrutiny from public health advocates and lawmakers over the health misinformation offered on Amazon.
Facebook recently announced it would downrank vaccine misinformation and remove advertising that spread vaccine hoaxes. YouTube disabled adverts on anti-vaccination videos and Pinterest also blocked all vaccine-related search results.
Autism is a developmental disorder and there is no cure. Children with the disorder show a broad range of characteristics, such as an inability to function well in school and difficulty forming relationships.
The ‘Healing the Symptoms Known As Autism’ was sold for $28 and had more than 600 customer reviews with 3.5 stars rating. It extolled the healing component of chlorine dioxide, a form of bleach that believers call the ‘Miracle Mineral Solution.’
Kerri Rivera, the author of the book, said 191 children have been cured from autism after following the method. The Food and Drug Administration warned chlorine dioxide can cause vomiting, nausea and life-threatening low blood pressure from dehydration.
